The Old Station Bells

One of the sounds of the railways of yesteryear (and some today, in a few instances) was the ringing of bells. Bells were a very important form of communication, and were used extensively for a signalman to communicate quickly and effectively with both his fellow signalmen in other boxes along the line and, if sited at a station, the platform staff. Probably the most frequent to be heard by passengers and staff waiting for a train are the platform bells. By this means the signalman would inform the station staff of various matters they needed to know... These platform bells are sited on the Cotswold stone wall of Gotherington Station, just north of Cheltenham.
